Minimum Age for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo

Gorilla trekking is one of East Africa’s most inspiring wildlife experiences. Standing just a few feet away from a mountain gorilla family, watching them feed, play, groom, and interact in their natural habitat, is an unforgettable moment for any traveler. This adventure is available only in three countries—Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)—which together host the last remaining populations of mountain gorillas.

Because gorillas are endangered and their habitats are delicate, every country has strict rules for trekking, including a minimum age requirement.

Where Gorilla Trekking Takes Place in East Africa

Uganda

Uganda is one of the top destinations for gorilla trekking. The country offers two main parks:

1. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
This UNESCO World Heritage Site hosts nearly half of the world’s mountain gorilla population. It has several trekking sectors, including Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo, each with different habituated gorilla families.

2. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Located in the Virunga massif, Mgahinga is home to the famous Nyakagezi gorilla family. Although the park has only one habituated family, the experience is equally rewarding.

Rwanda

Rwanda’s gorilla trekking is conducted exclusively in Volcanoes National Park, located in the northern part of the country. The park protects around 12 habituated gorilla families and is known for its well-organized trekking system and easy access—just a short drive from Kigali.

Democratic Republic of Congo

Congo offers two types of gorilla trekking experiences:

  • Virunga National Park – Home to mountain gorillas.

  • Kahuzi-Biega National Park – Famous for the Eastern Lowland Gorilla, a completely different species from mountain gorillas but equally fascinating.

Minimum Age Requirement for Gorilla Trekking

All three countries—Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC—have set the minimum age for gorilla trekking at 15 years.

Why Children Below 15 Are Not Allowed to Trek

1. High Risk of Disease Transmission

Mountain gorillas share 98% of their DNA with humans, making them extremely susceptible to human infections. Common illnesses such as flu, coughs, and measles can easily spread to gorillas and put their survival at risk. Children tend to carry and spread infections more easily, which is why the age limit helps protect gorilla families.

2. Trekking Involves Challenging Terrain

Gorilla trekking is done in dense forests, steep landscapes, and slippery trails. The hike can take anything from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the gorillas’ movement. Children may find this difficult to manage safely.

Activities for Children Under 15

Even though young children cannot trek gorillas, they can enjoy other exciting experiences during the safari, such as:

  • Guided nature walks

  • Cultural and community tours

  • Birdwatching

  • Canoe excursions

  • Visit to local craft markets

These activities offer a great way for families to explore Uganda’s wildlife and culture together.
